The Palestinian Association for Human Rights (witness) condemns in the strongest terms the violent series of airstrikes launched by Israeli occupation aircraft on Monday evening, June 1, 2026, at 8:00 PM Beirut time. These strikes directly targeted residential buildings opposite Jabal Amel Hospital in the city of Tyre, southern Lebanon, located approximately 20 meters from the hospital entrance, in a flagrant and new assault on vital infrastructure and the medical vicinity.
Jabal Amel Hospital is one of the primary health and medical pillars in the Tyre region and all of southern Lebanon. It houses advanced specialized centers and serves as the main lifeline for providing emergency and critical medical care to thousands of civilians and displaced persons in the area, making its targeting a complete destabilization of the relief and health system in the South.
This crime has resulted in an initial toll of 5 victims and 26 civilian injuries, alongside massive destruction of neighboring properties and facilities, spreading severe panic among residents and ambulance crews. The repercussions of this aggression were not limited to direct human and material losses; shrapnel and the blast wave caused a total power outage inside the hospital. This led to the cessation of oxygen supply systems in the intensive care units, threatening the lives of patients and the wounded with immediate death, with preliminary reports indicating additional fatalities resulting from this catastrophic outage.
(witness) asserts that targeting the vicinity of medical facilities, disrupting their operational capacity, and terrorizing medical crews and the wounded constitutes a flagrant violation of Articles 18 and 19 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which prohibit, under any circumstances, attacks on civilian hospitals and mandate that parties to a conflict must respect, protect, and facilitate their work at all times. Endangering the lives of patients in intensive care units by severing the hospital's vital arteries constitutes a full-fledged war crime that warrants international prosecution.
In view of the gravity of this humanitarian development, the Palestinian Association for Human Rights (witness) demands the following:
-
The United Nations and the international community: Intervene immediately and exert serious and direct pressure on the occupation authorities to halt their systematic and ongoing targeting of the health sector and the vicinity of hospitals in southern Lebanon.
-
The United Nations: Deploy immediate investigation and documentation committees to assess the damages inflicted upon Jabal Amel Hospital and determine the extent of the violations against patients and medical staff.
-
The High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions: Fulfill their legal and ethical obligations under Common Article 1, work to compel the occupation to respect the rules of International Humanitarian Law, and ensure full protection for civilians and medical facilities.
