prisoners and detainees in Lebanese prisons
The Palestinian Association for
Human Rights (Witness) launched a human rights report that monitors the
suffering of Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Lebanese prisons, under the
title "The Other side of the Suffering of Palestinian Prisoners and
Detainees," on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.
(Witness) showed the suffering of
Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Lebanese prisons, where it described
their reality as very bad. Where Hundreds of people have been waiting for fair
trials for years and some have been arbitrarily arrested.
(Witness) also exposed the reality
of Lebanese prisons, as there are 25 prisons on the Lebanese territory under
the custody of the General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces, and the
basic capacity is 2526 prisoners, while today it is more than 6,966 prisoners,
meaning overcrowding exceeds 141%.
(Witness) clarified the rights of
prisoners and detainees according to the international rules, which were
mentioned in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, especially the
rights of the accused or arrested on a case. (Witness) also showed the demand of
international organizations in Lebanon to improve the conditions of prisoners
and detainees.
(Witness) clarified the health
status of Palestinian prisoners after the economic crisis and the propagation
of Corona virus, especially after the developments in the health situation in
Roumieh Central Prison. Where (witness) expressed it fear of the absence of
health care in light of the difficulty of implementing preventive procedures
from social distancing and isolate the injured, due to the great overcrowding
in Lebanese prisons in general and the weakness of their infrastructure.
(A witness) said that the suffering
experienced by the families of Palestinian prisoners and detainees begins from
the first moment of the issuance of the decision to arrest their children,
where (witness) presents a summary of interviews from the families of
prisoners.
(Witness) concluded that there is a
lack of respect for the minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners in all
aspects (legal, health, and spatial), In addition to the bitter reality
experienced by Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Lebanon's prisons, all of
which lack proper conditions.
The Palestinian Association for
Human Rights (witness) called on the Lebanese government to look at the
Palestinian prisoners with a humanitarian look instead of keeping them hostage
to political disputes, and to accelerate the trials, and issuing a general
amnesty.
(Witness) also called on the
protection department of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for
Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to defend any Palestinian prisoner or detainee, and
the health department to provide them with health care.
